New Auxilary Bishop for Melbourn
Tonight the Church in Melbourne celebrates as the Holy Father has appointed Bishop Elect Vincent Long Van Nguyen as Auxilary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Melbourne. The appoint sees the first Ordination in Australia of a Vietnamese born Australian Bishop.
Bishop Elect Nguyen arrived in Australia in 1981 entering the the Conventuals Fransiscans two years later. Ordained a priest in 1989 he has held the positions of Assistant priest (1990-1992) and Parish Priest (2002-2008) of the parish of Springvale. Within the order he has ben director of Postulants, Custodial vicar and in 2005 was elected Provincial Superior, a position he held until 2008. Currently he is resident at the orders Generalate in Rome as a member of the international leadership team.
The Archbishop Denis Hart said:
“The appointment of Bishop Vincent as Auxilary of Melbourne is a historic one. He escaped from Vietnam by boat as a young man, came to Melbourne, joined the Conventuals Fransiscans, and has already given distinguished service as a pastor in Springvale, as a leader in his order and made a generous and gifted contribution to the Church”Archbishop Wilson, President of the Australian Bishops Conference said:
“As a Fransiscan he will bring fresh perspective to our deliberations as a conference, and I am sure show unique servant leadership in the Archdiocese of Melbourne”A close Fransiscan Friend said on hearing the appointment:
“We are extremely delighted, a win win situation for both the Vietnamese People, and the conventual Fransiscan Family in Australia”His Episcopal ordination has been set for Thursday 23rd June at 7:30pm, St Patricks Cathedral.
